Jazz and calories abound in busy Glendale bar and grill.. The Scene
A long bar and a small stag lead the way to small dining room with a few dingy tables. The whole thing is busily decorated with posters, stained glass lamps and trinkets. Live nightly music brings jazzbos to the bar. The horns can be loud, so sit farther back if you want conversation. Eating are kids on dates, older groups of friends, a suburban crowd. Service is nonchalant, and the wait between courses can be long.

The Food
Simple menu demonstrates a heavy hand with oil and sauces. Appetizers can be summed up as everything-fried or sourdough bread. Crab cakes are disappointingly soggy, but salt-and-pepper calamari tastes good with a beer. Among main dishes, a Spanish-tinged favorite is the shrimp casserole layered with mozzarella and prosciutto. Accompanying steamed vegetables are fresh, thick-cut and well-prepared. But for grab-n-go grub, prices are high.

Dish to Die For
Jack Daniels bread pudding is thick and flavorful, but beware of the pre-sweetened cappuccino.--Kim Cooper
