Toledo >Original Pancake House
Best in town. Best breakfast in town!! The apple & german are out of this world.the owner sure I'd doing something right! .
Made-to-order breakfasts---including over a dozen unique flapjacks---stack the odds in this restaurant's favor..
Founded in Oregon circa 1953, this simply-furnished spot owes its success to its creative menu and fresh ingredients. Batters are made on the premises; a special "sourdough starter" keeps treats from tasting overly sweet. Patrons choose from eggs, waffles, crepes and oven-baked omelets, as well as signature plates like blueberry pancakes (served with or without compote), giant cinnamon-glazed apple pancakes, thin and chewy "49-ers" and the air-filled, lemon-and-sugar-topped "Dutch Baby."
Confusion to the eaters, dang good food!.
As another review mentioned, the atmosphere in this restaurant is dreadful but the food makes it worth it. I have some suggestions to the owners if they are reading.
I completely agree that the owners need to get rid of the clutter. I am not a professional interior designer but I do some as a hobby for friends and family. I have studied up on it for years and this restaurant is a designers nightmare. The oddities, as I like to call them, should be minimalized and put in a designated area only. The Original Pancake House has no design other then something I like to call, "A little bit of everything" or "Chaos." I like a restaurant to set a mood and this one only shouts confusion. Hiring an interior designer would be very beneficial to this restaurant but understandably, expensive. In the least, I would recommend a new paint job and absolutely replacing the stained old window treatments in the front dining section plus getting rid of the clutter of figurines.
The first impression one would get from this restaurant is, "Oh my gosh, what is going on here?" Confusion due to not knowing if it is indeed a restaurant or a store. They need to simplify and keep things fresh and clean looking. Old window treatments and scuffed paint give a person the feeling of, "dirty" and I am sure that is hardly the impression a restaurant owner wants. I have a cousin who dines there every few months with co-workers for lunch. They say, "Lets go eat at the ugly restaurant today!" They love the food though.
Although I find the Ambiance irritating, it would not prevent me from eating in this establishment. The food is just to darn good to not eat there. Their Apple Pancake is the best I have ever had. Much better then any other place and better than homemade. Their prices are fair and the service is pretty good. I would recommend it to people that do not have claustrophobia, Haha!
Awesome food-Horrible atmosphere.
I have been going to the Original Pancake House since I was a child back in the late 70s. I have always loved their food. The German Pancake is a must have! They have great crepes too in just about every flavor imaginable.
Although I love their food, I have a very hard time dining in. The atmosphere is so bad, I have to resort to take out. It is a shame because I would much rather eat in then take my food across town and have it cold by the time I get home. My main gripe is all the cluttered knick knacks all over the restaurant. There are figurines and cheap floral arrangements on every available shelf, wall space, hanging from the ceiling and corners. It makes one feel like they could not decide if they wanted a restaurant or a gift shop so they threw them together into one huge monstrosity.
I strongly feel they should get rid of the clutter period. If they can't part with it, they need to put it all in one area, not overwhelm the customers with way to much distraction. It would be ok to have a few small things around but over the years, they just keep finding another hole or space to shove more tacky knick knacks in.
My plea (as well as a few others I know) is to the owners. PLEASE get rid of the eyesores! It is a restaurant not a store. Bring it back to the way it once was. Tastefully decorated and focused on food and service, not trying to sell stuff. The internet is a wonderful place to sell things! :)
