Editorial Review for Bella's – by Lynn Suhrie

In Short
This exposed brick, red-washed basement bar recalls an Ivy League frat house from the 1940s. Intellectual pursuit is alluded to with alcoves of intimate tables, period paintings and old books, but the real agenda is something more akin to a frat party. Young bankers with V-neck sweaters (and matching degrees) arrive like waves, with the women who love them following behind and singing along to the rock-and-roll soundtrack. Bottle service is available for those who would like to avoid the crush.

Insider Tips

Food Served

The pan-European restaurant upstairs, Bar Martignetti, serves up moules frites, steak tartare and more to barflies until 2am.

Know Before You Go

Dining in the restaurant isn't going to get you a golden ticket past Q, the bouncer--you'll still have to go outside and wait in line. There's more of a guarantee if you reserve a table in the bar.

This place is a joke. On a rainy Tuesday when the place has only 25 people total inside, 90% of them female, and all but a few with our group, you'd think they'd let a few respectable men in. But no, their door policies are more stringent than the best spots in NYC and with twice the attitude. I've been to good nights here but that was long ago. If you're looking for a large bar with no one in it, excessive attitude, and pricey drinks, give it a try. Otherwise, pass up this hole in the ground for a city full of better lounges and less BS.

Basically, the crowd that used to go to Martignetti Liquors, now goes to Belgrade because it's a much nicer setup. If you aren't one of these people, and you are a guy who doesn't know half the people in Belgrade on any given night, you probably won't have a good time. They keep the trash out. If you are one of the people who belongs there, it's always a great time.

Pros: Crowd, Music, Fun

Cons: Only one bar
